R2-D2 Motorola Droid 2 Special Edition – Coming next month!

As soon as news broke that an R2-D2 inspired Motorola Droid 2 would be gracing the real world, Star Wars fans all over the place got a little more excited for one of their little robots. Now that the Droid 2 has officially launched , a lot of people remained asking where on Earth (or perhaps, in the galaxy) their blue-and-white variant was. It looks like we at long last have a response, and the release of the device looks like it will be Sept 30th, just over a month away!

This Motorola R2-D2 Droid 2 Special Edition, as per the Motorola Droid 2, runs on Android 2.2 or Froyo, as it is lovingly called , and it contains a built in Adobe Flash player 10.1.
Other phone characteristics include :.

1. Larger keypad.
2. 1 GHz Snapdragon CPU .
3. Mobile 3G hot spot.
4. Online multi touch keyboard (It supports both physical keyboards and touchscreens , a main characteristic of Droid 2).
5. 3.7 inch touchscreen display.
6. 5 MP camera.
7. 8GB built in storage.

R2-D2 DROID 2

In honor of the iconic Astromech Droid from the Star Wars™ Saga, Verizon Wireless will offer a limited-edition R2-D2 version of the DROID 2, available only online in September. The special version of the phone will feature exclusive Star Wars content and external hardware designed to look like the trusty Droid from the film saga. Visitors to the upcoming Star Wars Celebration V in Orlando, Fla., can see a preview of the limited edition phone and sign up to receive alerts when the phone is ready for sale.

There are currently no word on pricing from Verizon or from the latest Android news yet, but it can be assumed that it will be the same as the Motorola Droid 2, meaning $200 after a $100 mail in rebate or perhaps somewhere in the area of $350 before a $100 mail in rebate assuming that will be offered. It is also believed a 2 year service contract will be necessary to lock in that rate as well.

The R2-D2 edition will be available online only and will contain Star Wars content with external hardware that resembles the actual R2D2 in the film. Now, when will there be a C3P0 version ?
